Stylist and brand consultant, Camilla messaged Lien just over a year ago for help with her brows. Only problem is… she’s based in London. Luckily, thanks to Whatsapp, several makeshift diagrams and Lien’s ongoing counsel, Camilla was able to achieve her Ultimate Brow Shape all the way in the UK! Here’s her story –

“Hi, I’m Camilla! I was studying at a university in Melbourne over a decade ago and started to follow quite a few Instagram accounts for the Aussie style inspiration. Honestly, Melbournites and Sydneysiders have the best taste. This is how I first discovered Lien – through stylish social media osmosis!

After following @BrowConfidence for a few years, I’d sussed out that Lien was the ultimate ‘go-to’ brow guru and loved her natural aesthetic; she really seemed to understand face shapes and brows of all ethnicities.

Sadly, since she’s based in sunny Sydney and I’m in old, grey Blighty (London), having the chance to visit her seemed like a pipe dream. In London (and England), the eyebrow scene has become quite aggressive with thick, painted and micro-bladed brows or tadpole threaded.

I’m half-Danish, half-Persian and I over-plucked my brows at school as part of that 90s trend (oh the regret!) and while I’ve never waxed them, I went through a phase of having them threaded over the years and they gradually lost their natural thickness.

“Unfortunately in 2017, I had thyroid cancer and since then I noticed that my brows were rapidly thinning at the ends. I tried to grow them out but did not feel confident about their shape. A year ago my brows had lost the plot and in a moment of madness, I went for a brow threading session and the lady at the brow bar butchered them, hacking off the top and underneath until I was left with two crazy arches.”

I was immediately filled with regret and nearly didn’t leave the house after that! I was waiting for them to grow back and was in quite a low place after cancer. But it was around this time a friend kindly gifted me a rose quartz crystal.

One night I decided I had nothing to lose by DM’ing Lien to ask if she could help me from afar to regain my natural shape. I slept with that rose quartz under my pillow and woke up at 5am to a message from Lien saying hello and asking me to send her a current selfie. After a few minutes we were on WhatsApp and then a call to discuss how to get my brows back.

After that initial consultation over the phone I felt confident we could work together to correct the shape of my brows. Lien was so easy to talk, she a great energy and is obviously passionate about her practice.

“I was worried that not being able to physically see each other would impact the shaping process but Lien was super confident that my brows could be their very best in a few months.”

The first thing she told me was that I really needed to relax my brows in photographs and practice not raising them. This was actually quite tough after a lifetime of bad habits. I also had to get very comfortable with the idea of sending selfies so she could assess my brow shape and give me my Ultimate Brow Shape measurements.

Once Lien had worked her magic with the measurements she could easily describe what we needed to do: fill my brows out and soften the over-arched look.

Whilst I’m pretty plucky with a tweezer, I was admittedly nervous to amend my own shape. But, Lien was encouraging and would send diagrams with lines across my brows that showed exactly where I needed to pluck. The beauty of her diagrams was that it was only ever a few hairs at a time. Eventually, I even came to grips with trimming the ends!

Over the summer I pinged her photos on WhatsApp with questions and she’d send me back diagrams and directions, creating change bit by bit to get my perfect shape. I think it helps that I’m a visual person. I imagine if you’re not used to tending to your own brows it could be a little overwhelming.

Since correcting my brows I’ve received a lot of compliments, mainly that I look youthful and well. I even got a “your brows are perfect”. But, the real test was at my engagement party when a friend told me that I had gorgeously thick brows like Sophia Loren. Now that’s a compliment I’ll take!

Lien came into my life at a point when I was low in confidence – not just with my brows. I only recently told her about the incident with the rose quartz under my pillow because I do believe she came into my life to help me at that very moment. She’s taught me how to love my natural brows and to steer clear of threading, which in hindsight was costing me a small fortune alongside new brow products.

Now I have the skills and the eye to maintain my own brows – saving me not just money, but teaching me to care and shape for them for the rest of my life.”

“My Mum and Mor Mor (Grandma) are my biggest beauty influences and encouraged me to start getting into beauty around age 15. Both of these women have thin, arched eyebrows drawn dark, which was the trend. Therefore, I used to pluck my eyebrows into this same paper-thin arched shape! My eyebrows stayed that way until I was about 20 when I decided to grow them out again; trends had changed and I was influenced by models like Bambi and Cara Delevingne.”

What is your current brow routine?

“My current routine is to make my eyebrows appear as fluffy as possible! I brush up with an un-used mascara head and use Anastasia Beverly Hills Dipbrow Pomade in ‘Ash Brown’ and a fine angled brush to fill in patches with light strokes. I finish with Maybelline Brow Drama Sculpting Brow Mascara in ‘Medium Brown’ to set into place.”

What does “Brow Confidence” mean to you?

“Having grown my eyebrows back into their natural shape, I feel that now I really look like ‘me‘ again. I don’t need to draw my eyebrows anymore how I used to, and that’s because I’m embracing my natural shape and have the knowledge that different face shapes suit different brows. I’ve found what is perfect for me and that gives me confidence.”

Describe your brows in three words –

Happy, natural, imperfectly-perfect (does that count as 3?)!

How did you find out about Lien?

“I found Lien online by looking up ‘best eyebrow beauticians’ as I was after someone who would take care of my eyebrows, not just wax-and-go. I was looking for an ‘eyebrow whisperer’ who I found in Lien. I knew she was the right person for me as she was honest about where my shape should be and the time it could take to get to my dream brows. No one can have a beauty fix overnight if it’s something you want to last!”

“When I was in high school all my friends were starting to tweeze their brows so I did too – I used a magnifying mirror and plucked the life out of them. They were sooooo thin and too harsh for my face. I eventually grew them out and mum took me to her beautician to have them waxed. They were shaped with such a high arch… I didn’t know there could be another way!”

What is your current brow routine?

“I visit Lien every 6-8 weeks for shaping and I rarely touch by brows with tweezers between visits. If anything I give them a small trim to keep them tidy. My brows are fair and even though my hair has grown in I still need to fill in small gaps. For work days I tend to put more effort in as I can often go from day to night with work functions. For weekends I keep it very low key with a bit of brow mascara. I mostly use Maybelline products: Brow Drama Sculpting Brow MascaraEyestudio Micro Brow Precise Auto; and Brow Precise Perfecting Highlighter.”

What does “Brow Confidence” mean to you?

“Brow Confidence’ means self-confidence! Since visiting Lien I wear less makeup and rarely use eyeliner. I allow my brows to shape and frame my face.”

Describe your brows in three words –

“Full, natural and neat.”

How did you find out about Lien?

“Through Zoë Foster Blake’s blog and book. My sister and I are obsessed with Zoë. We love her smart and witty sense of humour and would spend hours watching her online make-up tutorials.”

“My earliest brow memories from high school involve sitting around in a circle during lunch break whilst one of my girlfriends plucked our brows. It is safe to say we didn’t have the greatest brows, but we thought we looked pretty fabulous.”

How did you find out about Lien?

“The wonderful world of Instagram introduced me to Lien!”

What is your current brow routine?

“These days my brows are very low maintenance; a quick brush up and go! If I need something with a stronger hold I will use Maybelline Brow Mascara in Medium Brow; Lien recommended this to me at an appointment a few years ago! This keeps my brows looking full and a little undone.”

It would have been when I was about 13 years old, at a beautician who enjoyed waxing a little too much. It seemed to be all about a good arch back then. Yikes. Also, I don’t remember there ever being instructions on how to style or groom brows back then.

How did you discover Lien?

All the fab ladies with fab brows in my social feeds seemed to go to Lien so I just knew I had to track her down. I saw her on her first visit to Melbourne about four years ago and have been going to her ever since then. Not only is she some sort of brow magician, she is also such a lovely and inspiring lady to hang out with.

What is your current brow routine?

I would say visiting Lien every 8 weeks for a brow trim/pluck and tint is a core part of my routine. In between visits, I love either M.A.C Cosmetics Pencil in Fling or a cheapie dupe from Maybelline (brow precise micro pencil) and also Maybelline Brow Drama Mascara. Oh, and outlining with some concealer is really my favourite thing and one of Lien’s best tips.

My sister would tweeze my stray brow hairs when I was younger. Thankfully I didn’t have any traumatic experiences but my natural shape definitely needed some TLC. I’m quite lucky because I just missed the pencil-thin eyebrow trend and Lien has been perfecting my brows since I was in high school.

What is your current brow routine?

It all depends on what kind of mood I am in. Some days I will sweep some tinted eyebrow gel through my brows and call it a day. Other days, when I want to be a bit extra, I will use a dark brown pomade to fill in my arch area and define the lower-line of my brow then pop in some gel. I have the luxury to leave my brows as they are most days because of Lien’s handy work!

“Some days I will sweep some tinted eyebrow gel through my brows and call it a day.”

What does “Brow Confidence” mean to you?

Brow confidence to me is when your brows balance and almost lift your face without demanding the stage.

Describe your brows –

Low-maintenance face framers.

Tell us about your first brow experience?

My first brow experience was when I was about 12 years old and my mum came at me with some tweezers. Since then I’ve tried lots of different brow products and services until I found Lien 4 years ago. My first experience with Lien was amazing, I felt instantly comfortable with her and didn’t know my brows could look like that! She’s a magician!

What is your current brow routine?

I don’t wear a lot of makeup during the day but I will never, ever leave the house without doing my brows! I fill in a few gaps using a brow powder or pencil, blend using the art brush Lien found and then set with a brow gel. I always have to use a brow gel because I have very unruly brows! I also see Lien every time she’s in Melbourne for touch up and a bit of life advice.

“I don’t wear a lot of makeup during the day but I will never, ever leave the house without doing my brows!”

What does “Brow Confidence” mean to you?

Brow confidence is knowing that my brows are the best they can be, feeling put together and being able to leave the house makeup free and feeling great.

Bushy, the good kind.

Tell us about your first brow experience?

I was a 20 year old with over plucked, over waxed, terribly uneven brows when I first met Lien over a decade ago. Way back then she was operating from her apartment in Bondi and didn’t even have kids! It was a fateful meeting and I credit her with transforming my face through her tough brow love. Her honesty and passion is refreshing.

What is your current brow routine?

Incredibly low maintenance! And they’ve never looked better! I pluck the odd stray, give them a brush and see Lien every few months whenever I’m home in Australia. My grooming sessions with her are like a brow empowerment pep talk and I always walk away feeling confident in my ability to do my own brows.

What does “Brow Confidence” mean to you?

Looking at everyone else’s brows and wanting to give them some Lien wisdom. Maybe that’s more brow arrogance?

Describe your brows in 3 words –

Recovered wax victims.

Name: Lien Davies
Age: Almost 42!
Occupation: Brow Stylist/Designer

Tell us, what was your first brow experience?

I can’t exactly remember when it was, but based on #flashback pictures I guess it happened when I was 18 years old. Like most girls, I just started tweezing – and next thing I knew I had thin, uneven, rounded brows for many years.

“[The first time I tweezed] there was no major dislike of my brows, I just wanted to tidy them up. I’m a bit of a neat freak.”

What is your current brow routine?

When it comes to my beauty ritual, styling my brows is my number one priority. This two-minute relaxing practice (haha, I’m sure you won’t agree) is my confidence booster.

Depending on my mood, my brows can look naturally undone, or darker and fuller.

For NATURAL BROWS, I alternate between powders (Bobbi Brown Eyeshadow in ‘Smoke’ or Inglot Brow Powder in #565 or #567 – cool tones) to slightly correct my brows then top with a few coats of a tinted brow mascara (Maybelline Brow Drama Mascara in ‘Dark Brown’ and Glossier Boy Brow in ‘Black’).

For STATEMENT BROWS, which only come out to play once in a while, I use multiple products in this specific layering order to help them last the distance:

1. Gel
2. Powder
3. Tinted brow mascara
4. Outline my brows in concealer (Maybelline Brow Precise Highlighter in Medium)

What does “Brow Confidence” mean to you?

Brow Confidence is my definition of beauty empowerment. When my brows are done and my features are subtly highlighted, I look my best (almost) natural self.

“I called my business Brow Confidence because that’s my aspiration for everyone. For over a decade I’ve been doing brows and heard countless stories from women who feel they have no control over their brows and how their brows make them feel less confident, so it’s about flipping that on its head.”

Describe your brows in 3 words –

Natural, balanced, fuss-free.

Name: Alice Treloar
Age: 30
Occupation: TV Producer

Tell us, what was your first brow experience?

I was pretty young when my older sister told me I had “John Howard” eyebrows and should probably do something about it. Thankfully I embraced the au naturale look – now, bigger is definitely better for brows – but I did need some hand-holding along the way. My first experience with Lien was a total game changer. Her method was precise, almost mathematical, using a ruler to measure face proportions. Her changes were subtle – shifting the arch point for a better shape, plucking strays to tidy but it had an immediate impact. The best bit? She armed me with the knowledge to DIY at home. Every appointment since is a valued beauty tutorial.

What is your current brow routine?

I try to keep things simple. 1) Skip washing my face because I’m inherently lazy. 2)  Fill in any gaps using Bobbi Brown Smoke Eye Shadow and a flat-tip paint brush. 3) Make sure strands are behaving (read: sticking up, not sideways) with Maybelline Light Brown Brow Mascara. Two coats, always.

What does “Brow Confidence” mean to you?

Sure, confidence comes from within and so on and so forth, but if we’re being honest, it also comes from looking good. We all want to put our best face forward.

“Well-manicured brows definitely put a little swagger in my step. Also, they take the focus away from my legs which I’ve probably neglected to shave.”

Describe your brows in 3 words –

My best feature (if pencil-thin eyebrows come back in vogue, I’m in trouble).
