Why you should rethink brow lamination – and what to do instead
Brow lamination has taken the beauty world by storm, promising fuller, fluffier, and perfectly styled brows without daily maintenance. However, brow lamination can lead to weakened, brittle hairs, thinning, and even permanent damage to your natural brows over time.
Before you consider brow lamination—it's important to understand the potential risks and explore healthier alternatives that still give you the look you love.
How Brow Lamination Can Damage Your Brows
The process of brow lamination involves applying a chemical solution that breaks down and restructures the hair bonds, making them more flexible and easy to style. However, this comes with some serious downsides:
Over-processing Can Lead to Hair Loss. The same chemicals that straighten and set the brows can weaken the hairs over time, making them brittle and more likely to fall out.
Irritation and Sensitivity. The skin around your brows is delicate, and frequent chemical exposure can cause irritation, dryness, and even inflammation of the hair follicles, leading to thinning.
Frequent Treatments Weaken the Brows. Since brow lamination is a temporary treatment, many get it done every 6–8 weeks. Without proper recovery time, brows may lose their natural strength and fullness.
Risk of Over-Plucking or Patchiness. As brows become thinner or weaker, people often overcompensate with more grooming, leading to long-term damage.
A Healthier Approach to Beautiful Brows
The good news? You don't need harsh chemicals to achieve full, lifted, and well-groomed brows. Here are some safe and effective alternatives:
1. Brow Gel (Clear or Tinted)
For a quick, lamination-like hold, a strong-hold brow gel can help shape and lift your brows all day.
Try: Benefit 24-Hr Brow Setter, Kosas Air Brow Fluff & Hold Treatment Gel
2. Brow Wax or Soap Brows
This is a simple and effective way to mimic the laminated look without damage. Brush through with a spoolie, and your brows stay lifted and styled.
Try: Anastasia Beverly Hills Brow Freeze, Pears Soap for classic soap brows.
3. Brow pen and pencils for a fuller look
If you want more definition and color, a combination of a brow pencil and brow pen can make brows appear naturally fuller with realistic hair strokes.
Side note on brow serum
I don’t personally recommend brow serums for my clients because the hope of regrowth when hair follicles are damage from years of over- plucking and over-waxing is next to none. Instead, I take more of a proactive approach by teaching them how to correct common brow concerns with products. A brow serum is only effective if hair follicles are still active but weakened – peptide-based and nutrient-rich serums can stimulate growth by nourishing the follicle and encouraging stronger, healthier hair.
Try: The Ordinary Multi-Peptide Lash & Brow Serum
Why Natural, Healthy Brows Are Always in Style
While brow lamination may be trendy now, natural, healthy brows never go out of style. Over-treating your brows could lead to long-term damage that takes years to reverse or worse - never. By choosing gentler alternatives, you can maintain strong, beautiful brows without risking your health.
